Stratgies to Reduce the Number of True Genotoxins Proceeding to Animal Testing

At present, compounds carrying positive in vitro genotoxicity test results are often carried forward for in vivo tests, because of a lack of specificity in the current regulatory in vitro mammalian tests. This wastes animals and money confirming the true positive results, and constitutes an avoidable waste of discovery resource in carrying compounds liable to failure. Two simple solutions to this, using an accurate screening test, will be discussed inclusion of genotoxicity profiling at an early stage, and late screening of compounds carrying positive regulatory data.
